Anybody out there surprised the Pacific-10 Conference advanced three men's teams to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16?
Yep. UCLA coach Ben Howland. He's surprised it wasn't four.

"It could have easily been four," Howland says, referring to the fact Washington State, the Pac-10's second-place team, couldn't hold a 10-point second-half lead and lost in double overtime to Vanderbilt. "And it's not going to change next year, either. It's going to be tough each and every year."

Southern California and Oregon also survived the first two rounds, with the Trojans getting past Texas and super freshman Kevin Durant and Oregon methodically drubbing Winthrop, seemingly everyone's favorite would-be Cinderella.

"I think early in the year everybody realized the Pac-10 was probably a little bit underrated," Texas coach Rick Barnes says. "What I like about USC is they have gotten better, have continued to improve.

"Certainly Oregon has had a great year, winning that league (tournament). I would say the Pac-10 should feel pretty good about the year they have had."

No. 2 seed UCLA, against Pittsburgh, and No. 3 seed Oregon, against UNLV, will be favored this week.

The fifth-seeded Trojans, who face North Carolina next, would be a surprise to make it to this year's Final Four. But maybe not next year's, with O.J. Mayo, perhaps the best high school player in the country, and three other strong recruits ready to enroll.

UCLA (forward Kevin Love) and Arizona (guard Jerryd Bayless) also are awaiting top-10 prospects.

Freshman 7-footers Spencer Hawes of Washington and twins Brook and Robin Lopez of Stanford, if they don't go to the NBA, and Brook Lopez said Monday that he wouldn't, will be among the top big men.

"It's a special league, and we have referred to that all season long," USC second-year coach Tim Floyd says. "If we can survive our league, going against the people that we have to go against every night, then we are going to have all the confidence in the world going into the NCAA tournament."
